Harry Gates is a life-long Communist journalist who regrets his role in shaping the society Britain has become. He is recruited by a shadowy ex-politician to investigate the truth behind the murder of a top union official whose allegiances were suspect, and he realises he is caught between a generational plan to restore a democratic system of government and the ruthless guardians of the totalitarian order.
